Don't misunderstand me. I love golf. I find the game relaxing and as soothing as a Mint Julep…until I leave the clubhouse bar and actually get out on the fairways. With all the competition for the sports entertainment dollar, some things may simply have to change.

The fact is that Tiger seems to be finding his feet are made of clay and the sponsors are debating the relative merits of the "snooze" factor. They could get in some new players from other sports but Shaquille O'Neal's contract prohibits him from actually playing and Rodman may be looking at redecorating his new digs at the San Quentin Correctional Facility and summer basketball camp. So, it looks like it is up to me to come up with a new marketing scheme that will enhance the time-honored traditions of Golf and yet produce the excitement of a World Wrestling Federation cage match.

You can call me crazy but I think the honchos at the PGA should consider some of my ideas. They are thoroughly researched and I have the empty beer bottles to prove it.

In this article I'll explain my story about my golf swing and how I improved it (and you probably can too!).

When I first started to play golf I did what many people do. I bought a good set of clubs, shoes, bag, trolley, and so-on, and began by going to the driving range. I also had a couple of friends who had recently been learning to play golf so we quite enjoyed hitting some balls on the range together.

After several weeks of going to the range I started to have a few rounds at my local golf course. I must have lost more balls than there are holes for my first few rounds! Every time I finished a round though I noticed how poorly I was playing on the golf course in comparison to being at the driving range.

To help improve I booked in for lessons at my local golf course. Little did I know at the time however that this would do more harm than good. It seemed to start off well as I was beginning to hit the ball better more consistently after a few lessons, but after a while I reached a point when I couldn't improve any more. No matter what I tried I would still get about the same score when I first my round. So, i stopped the lessons.

Fast-forward 2 years and it became clear why I wasn't improving any more. By chance one day I was on the driving range next to a man (Aaron - now my friend) who didn't seem to hit a single ball wrong! I however, was my usual self; some sliced, some topped, some sweet. As it turned out he was a local pro and offered to help me out whilst at the driving range. He watched as I hit a few balls and worked out almost immediately what was wrong; it was my swing!

Aaron asked if I'd ever had lessons and was amazed when I told him that in fact I did. My swing was too fast, the angle that I approached the ball at was completely off, and the club rotation was too far on the backswing. All this time and the reason I wasn't improving was because I had gotten used to a bad swing over the years from my initial lessons!

Although I've got plenty of improving still to do, I'm now enjoying golf more than ever. Not only has Aaron since helped me but he has also recommended to me some of the resources that he refers to when doing golf coaching. If you are just starting out with golf, and even if you've been playing for a while but want to improve your swing, my advice would be to use golf swing instructions from experienced players that know what they're doing.

Golf Course History and Design 101

Welcome to this morning's class. I have an early tee time, so let's get right to the subject.

If one understands history one may find a means to cease repeating the errors that beset a man. In doing so, one will have scored an Eagle on the back nine of existence. One will be a changed person.

Since you are in this class, you obviously are considering a career path in golf. There are many paths to choose. Besides teaching this class, I am going to follow in the path of my legendary heroes Jack Nicolas and Arnold Palmer. Am I going to play perfect golf and have throngs of rabid fans chewing on my golf shoes like a 2-month-old Doberman puppy? No!

I am going to design golf courses…and you should, too! There is a huge market. The sky is the limit!

I have done my history research by watching the great golf documentary "Braveheart", starring Mel Gibson.

Let me explain.

Back in the Paleolithic age, there was no golf. Neanderthals were too busy being eaten by ferocious Pingodons and Spaldingasaurs. But the competitive spirit derives from those competitions.

It was Cro-Magnon man who came up with the idea of smacking number 2 Wilsonoraptor droppings with a stick for fun and pleasure. He used the same stick he used to fend off Big Bertha, his mate and cave companion, and saber-toothed tigers hence the name of those famous clubs…The Tiger Woods edition.

The game developed over the eons and spread to places like England and Scotland. In England, the game became the pastime of Kings and Dukes and Earls. They would go out and enjoy the medieval afternoons swilling brandy and betting on which of the royal ball-hitters would actually hit a ball into the woods so that the royal ball finders could do something. The game was slow to develop there because the King's royal golf game setter-upper would call and ask for teatime and the groundskeeper would spend a lot of time explaining audibly that it was "tee time". By the time that was settled, the fad in England was croquet.

But in Scotland, the game flourished. A highland warrior named Macgregor came up with the idea of a golf course. He also came up with the idea of a scorecard and lying about what you put on it. He was far ahead of his time. Eventually, the other clans began playing with large clubs called shillelaghs. They went on to develop other aspects of the game like Chieftain's Choice and Mulligan.

The game became so popular that it was difficult to get a tee time on Macgregor's one course. Four clans-somes would show up at 8 in the morning and an argument would develop over who got to go first. Shoving and shouting ensued and soon there was bloodshed.

The racket they made was so loud; it disturbed the English King' s croquet match. He sent a few of his Lordships over to ask them to be quiet. They discovered the golf course and returned to tell the King about it. He had his royal ship-launcher launch an invasion to possess the wonder. It didn't help the Scots that he also discovered Scotch Whiskey and was extremely tired of the taste of brandy and grog. The King wanted the course so that he could bring all his dukes and earls and let them swing willy-nilly at croquet balls. He did not grasp the concept of the golf cup nor did he understand the foursome.

So, as depicted in the movie Braveheart, William Wallace stood on the field of honor to face King Edward (also known as "Long Shanks" because of his swing deficiency).

Wallace had lost a bet on the eighteenth and as a result had to wear blue paint on his face. But he managed to unite the clans to keep the English from taking the world's only golf course and keep it safe for beloved Scotland. He stood before the thousands of furious warriors and just before the valiant charge shouted the immortal words." FOURSOME!"

The English scribes who were present to record the historic moment misunderstood his thick, accented cry and related it in the chronicles as "FREEDOM!" Thus the concept of the personal automobile was born and life as we know it today logically followed.

We owe a great debt of gratitude to those early Scot golfers.

Do you realise why most amateurs three-putt more times on their first nine holes than on their last nines holes? Because by the time they get to the last nine holes they have the feel of the greens!

An underlying contributory factor to that statistic is that the vast majority of amateur golfers do not practice their putting prior to the start of their round. Most golf courses have an area put aside for putting practice and it is here, perhaps over a fifteen-minute spell prior to the tee-off, that various putting distances should be run through so that by the time the first green is reached and the putter withdrawn from the bag a feel for the greens has already been established.

However, in order to become a great putter you must have the ability to read greens. And you must also have a great touch. The two abilities are unavoidably inter-linked. You have to develop your touch in order to control your speed. How may times have you asked a golfing partner after they have hit their putt if they thought the putt was going uphill or downhill. Most respond with that they forgot about the speed! Simply, most amateur golfers struggle more with the speed element than with the direction element.

An important consideration in putting is to remember that 90% of all putting greens in the world are built low in the front and high in the back. There are two reasons for this. Firstly, the green will hold the shots that are coming onto it and secondly for practical drainage purposes.

So, knowing this means that the majority of putts hit from the front of the green going to the back are going to be slower than putts hit from the back of the green going towards the front. And that also means that when you are facing the green, putts from the right side of the green will have a tendency to break to the left and putts from the left side of the green will have a tendency to break to the right.

An amateur golfer can take up to 43% of their shots just on the putting greens. So if you can putt more consistently imagine how your overall golf score will benefit.

Distance Control And The 4 Second Rule

For me this putting instruction that you are about to read is the real "Gold" in putting instruction. Whoever masters distance control in putting...... is the person you should fear on the putting green.

Most of putting accuracy and precision begins and ends with distance control. Distance control comes from touch for the given green plus targeting. Once distance control becomes automatic, you never need to worry about it much and can devote almost all your practice, attention, and on-course focus to reading and hitting the correct path into the hole.

Getting Distance Control

Every green has a different speed and the speed changes during the day and from day to day. Hopefully, the speeds of all greens on a course are close, but this is only within a certain range. So distance control inevitably entails some green reading for speed and some "touch" just for that particular speed.

Once you have a touch for the particular green speed calibrated, and have taken advantage of your experience and senses to judge speed conditions variation from green to green, distance control is a matter of targeting. By targeting I mean the physical procedures you use to localize the hole or target in relation to your body and your body's action. This is only partly a matter of vision.

Learn to Use the Neck Turn for Distance

Once beside the ball, you have to resettle the brain, since you've just stopped moving. Then focus steadily on the ball and turn your head to carry the gaze along the path on the ground at the speed your experience and touch tells you the ball will likely roll in the perfect putt. It's not the eyes that matter here. It's the pacing and extent of your neck turn. It helps to have the eyes in plane with the putt plane, but the real important cue is what your neck muscles tell your brain about distance. So pretend you really are following the ball to and into the hole.

Focus on the Hole Itself for at Least 4 Seconds

Once your gaze is at the hole, keep it there at least 4 seconds. Three seconds is not enough because the brain gets bored and wants to get on with it, so you have to override the urge to look away. It takes at least 4 seconds for the brain to form an enduring image and to sort out the distance fully. Also don't let your eyesight jump or wander about. Look steadily at the hole or even some point on the lip or down into the center of the cup. This procedure creates an anchor point as your body assesses direction and distance, and it also creates an image of the apparent shape and size of the hole that your brain uses to assess distance as well. (This aspect of the routine also helps with orienting the body for a stroke on the proper line.)

At this time, mentally the only thing you want in your mind is a sense of the "thereness" of the hole: the hole is exactly there, not to the left or right, or nearer or farther, just there.

Scan Along the Line from the Hole Back to the Ball

Then, look from the hole along the path with a smooth neck turn back to the ball. At this time, you have about as vivid a sense of the location of the hole in terms of distance and direction as you are likely to get, and you have an internal mental image of the appearance of the hole. You also have a kinetic, rhythmic sense of the neck turn and a memory of just how far to turn the neck to get back to the hole.

That's It.....Just Putt.

The actual stroke is automatic from here on....

You do not need to think about the force of the stroke, and in fact it probably hurts to do so. Just let the neck turn's pacing and extent work its magic by mimicking this in your stroke's tempo. The length of your stroke will adjust itself without conscious involvement. All you want consciously is the thought: use your athletic ability to "roll the ball into the hole." All the way, at the best speed for capture.
Making This Part of Your Game. Try this routine on 10 foot putts. Use it with the Core Putt to see how it works.

Then try longer putts. Over time, I believe you will find you begin to trust and respect the consistency and accuracy you gain, and these procedures "solve" far more problems than other ways you try. In particular, the still focus on the hole plays a much more pronounced role in getting distance control than one would ever suspect.

Once you have exquisite distance control, you feel liberated to concentrate solely on line and break. All putts start to look very similar, regardless of length. Leaves and comebacks only become a concern when severe down-slope is near the hole on the far side.

In a word, you've reduced putting's problem in half and thereby doubled your rate of progress toward excellent putting on a permanent basis.

The reason why they play well is because they know the fundamentals of this game and use those to improve their personal abilities.

Accuracy before distance.

Most new golf players' attempts at playing their first golf games are usually an exercise in whacking - because that's all it is. Whacking is not the same as swinging and its purpose is all about hitting the golf ball as hard as you can. Big mistake. In fact, two big mistakes.

This second golfing tip is all about building and honing your accuracy first before you attempt at creating distance. It begins and ends with the actions of the different parts of your body and how they are coordinated to produce a movement that will carry through. Once you have mastered how the movement flows from these parts of your body down to your golf club to produce an explosive swing, you will know exactly how to use your strength to create the right kind of swing to lead the ball in the right direction.

In the same manner that you can't shoot a picture with a hair dyer, you can't play a good golf game with the wrong equipment. Learn which golf equipment to use that will complement your body type and size. There's a particular size of golf clubs and drivers you should choose depending on your height. The type of clubs you buy will also depend on your strength. Find out which golf equipment will work best for your playing style.

Remember good golf etiquette.

Golf is a gentleman's game and good etiquette plays a role in its reputation and appeal, that is why it comes with some of the most time-honored rules and unspoken agreements. Even if a golfer has the capability to be ambidextrous (use both right and left hands as a preference pretty equally), only a certain number of clubs can be carried, by the rules of the game, so a choice has to be made. And it is usually the choice of how they feel most comfortable when holding the club.

In a world of continuing change and one where commercial requirements drive punters to buy the 'next best thing' to improve their game that little sliver more, manufacturers continue to make design changes on both right and left handed golf clubs. Those changes that develop the technology for right-handers are just as effectively applied when left handed golf clubs are designed and manufactured too.

Today you are going to learn about why it is important to play with people better than you if you want to improve your own game.

Okay, so you have probably heard this before and you are thinking, I know this already, but are you doing it? Have you really tried it? Or have you played with people you are comfortable with and you just keep shooting the same scores? I thought so.

So, let's review why this is a good idea. First of all, you get to meet some new people who you haven't met before and it's always fun to meet new people. Second, you are more than likely going to focus more on your round because you don't want to embarrass yourself. But the biggest thing that will help you is, watching the better player during his or her round and start to emulate what they do. Watch their pre shot routine, watch how they concentrate, listen to their self talk or do they say anything at all after a shot? By watching them play and watching how they play, you will start to see how their game is different from yours and how you can take some of the things they are doing and start using them in your game.

Am I suggesting you dump your normal playing partners? No. Am I suggesting if you are a 22 handicap to play with a scratch golfer? Well, if you have the confidence that it won't intimidate you too much, yes, but if you feel more comfortable with say a 12 or a 13 handicap player, then do that.

The key is, play with someone better than you. It will automatically cause you to play better in your own game and your old partners will want to be more like you. That's because you are always winning your $2 nassau bet each week all three ways.

I suggest you give it a try. The only thing it can hurt is maybe your pride a little but in the end, you will be a better player for doing it.

Here are some tips for helping you to play on the golf course.

Select the correct set of tees according to your actual swing and not as per the normal rules of golf. Why I am telling you not to follow the rules? Very simple because none of us have the same swing and therefore, the impact on your club face will be different.

2 types of golfers and 2 types of impact.

There are many different swings according if you are professional, amateur or even beginner golfers, however the 2 most important ones are; you are down swinging with your shoulders which means you are using your shoulders to turn your body when you hit your ball and you are using your hips on your downswing and make your follow threw.

So from there, how do we adjust our tee according to our actual swing? First, determine if you are a shoulder golfer or a hips golfer. Let me explain the consequence of a shoulder golfer. When you turn your shoulder on your down swing, what you do not realize, is that, at the time of the impact your club will be raise about 3/4 inches from the floor. Why? Well simply because when, you first position yourself for your tee off, your both shoulders are parallels, your club is on the ground and your body alignment is properly set up to come back at the same place after your downswing. However by turning your shoulders your are advancing the club by 1 or 2 inches ahead of you, depending how bad is the rotation, which create to lift the club, because your arm is extend at the maximum, and you have no choice lifting your club.

The impact will result on the top of the club face which will create the ball to go lower and less distance. You will need to putt you tee higher, when your ball is on the tee, and when placing the club face behind, the bottom of the ball should be level to the top of your club face. After hitting your shot, you will realize that the mark on the club face will be exactly in the middle of your club height, which is the perfect position for a nice fly. A golfer using his hips will simply putt his tee normal which mean half of the ball over the top of the club face, because he will come back at the same position of departure. No matter how you play, the ball has to come back to the middle of the club face which is the key for a perfect flight. So do not follow the normal rules if you don't have a normal swing. Adjust yourself to your actual swing, especially if you do not want to become professional. This tip is good for all types and sizes including the oversize drivers.

How To Master The Irons And Perfect The Golf Swing

After having played, practiced, and experimented with my own golf
swing over a period of some 30 years, I have reached some rather
definite conclusions concerning the swing and its execution.

These conclusions, which I have boiled down into four categories,
have been tried and tested under all conditions and types of
play, from casual rounds to tournament competition, and, while
there is nothing startlingly new about them, they do serve to
emphasize the fact that you must practice and perfect them if
you wish to become an accomplished golf player.

These four steps to better iron play are:

(1) Form

(2) Rhythm

(3) Proper turn and shifting of the weight

(4) A good follow-through

The Form Of A Golfer

A player must have good form if he is to achieve success in golf.

Naturally, some players aren't in form as others, but they are
almost identical at two important stages of the swing,
the address and at impact. Develop your form, and the development
of your game will follow naturally.

Swing With Rhythm

Every golfer has a different tempo to his swing. You should
develop a smooth, powerful swing that will generate maximum
power through the ball. Good tempo and good timing go hand in
hand in a golf swing.

The windup should start slow and be unhurried. At the start of
the downswing, the first move should also be smoothly performed;
then, as the hands and arms reach the hitting area, they can
lash out through the ball with all of the power the legs and body
have generated.

A good point to remember is that the upper part of the body winds
up the swing and the lower part of the body starts the unwinding
process.

Weight Shift

The weight is shifted to the left side much faster on an iron
shot than it is when you are hitting a wood. The reason for this
is that the shaft and the swing are shorter, thus making the
swing more upright. Also, the ball must be contacted on the
downswing, so the action of the body, arms, and hands must be
faster.

Another thing: The wrists are broken sooner on the backswing with
the irons, because this aids you in making the downward hit.

The weight shift is accomplished by the entire left side, but
mainly by the left hip, followed by the straightening of the left
leg and planting of the left heel on the ground. A strong
pulling-down action of the left arm and shoulder follows as the
left hip moves slightly laterally and then around.

This clears the left side, eliminating blocking action which
results when the left leg buckles and the body slides too far
past the ball. The movement described above eliminates another
enigma the beginning golfer encounters, the fat shot.

One final word of caution about this weight shift: It must be
smoothly done, not in a jerky, convulsive movement.

The Follow-Through

Turning out of the shot properly is one of the last things a
golfer learns how to do. Assuming that you have moved into the
downswing correctly, you can increase your directional control
immeasurably if you will permit your right hand and arm, as an
extension of the club shaft, to follow through toward the target.

Do not permit your right shoulder to rush around in front of you.
This would throw the entire swing outside the line of flight.
Instead, the right shoulder works under the chin so that you can
follow through properly on line with the target.

If you have not played golf for a period of time whether
due to work illness or injury, the situation is the same.

You wonder how you are going to play.

How many trips to the trees on the side of the fairways.

How many bunkers are you going to visit.

Whether you can still get out of a bunker.

Whether you can get off the tee, and how is your putting
going to be?

You are quite a serious golfer and you give much thought
about how you should return to this wonderful game.
What you decide to do is go to the practice fairway and hit
a heap of balls.

You go through the routine of starting with your pitching
wedge and then work up to your driver. So far so good and
you will certainly benefit. This is a good plan, but there is a better one.

During your session which you no doubt enjoyed,
you have probably hit too many balls and your
muscles are not up to it.

You will know this by how you
feel next day if you go out onto the course.
The very fine muscles have to have time to recover.
Until they do, you will play dreadfully.

OK, you still have to go out onto the course and get over
the mental block that is probably affecting your game.
Just feeling a bit negative.

If you are not feeling negative, you probably soon will be
as you duff and hit with hook and slice into the trouble on
each side.
If you don't do this, then well done.
Most of us will.

Then again you may have a great round on your initial
return to the game, but on your second, the wheels will
fall off. Has this ever happened to you?
It certainly has to me.
You become a little disheartened and you begin to dislike
the game a bit.
All this is leading up to a suggestion that you may find to
your liking.

You love playing golf don't you?

Well, why don't you go out onto the course straight away
and have a good time. Don't try to beat the world on this
round. Just enjoy yourself. Just relax.
However, take notice of where your weaknesses are. Where
the changes in your game have crept in during your absence.

Have a couple of rounds and write down your weaknesses.
THEN go to the practice fairway.

Now, you have a plan of attack.
Have a look at your first weakness.

Perhaps you are duffing your chips a bit.
Well, spend a practice session with your pitching wedge and hit
short shots, long shots, hit over imaginary bunkers, hit
high shots that stop quickly and so on.

Become totally confident with this important scoring iron again.
Then on your next practice session, address your next weakness.

Spend time on it and do not go on to the next
until you have mastered this aspect of your game to your
satisfaction.
OK, it takes a bit of time.
So does learning any skill, and
this one is one of the most difficult isn't it?

The time spent will return huge dividends.

Also, having a plan will strengthen your mental attitude
and you will play with much more confidence when you start
competitions and more serious play.

You will be able to
fill your mind with the good shots you hit at practice
making it impossible
for any negative thoughts to exist.

How to Determine Your Golf Handicap

Your golf handicap is calculated with a formula that averages how a player should be able to play better than par.

There are two slightly different ways to calculate your handicap which I detail below.

A wide spread belief amongst golfers is that a player's handicap is their average score, when in fact a your golf handicap is only the potential of your game. Most golfers play their handicap 25% of the time which is know as playing your "average best". So in a large, handicapped competition, the golfer who shoots the best with respect to his or her abilities and the normal variations of the score should win.

While there are many variations, handicap systems are generally based on calculating an individual player's playing ability from his or her recent history of rounds. Therefore, a handicap is not fixed but is regularly adjusted to increases or decreases in a player's scoring.

A golfer whose handicap is zero is called a "scratch golfer." A golfer whose handicap is 20 is called a "bogey golfer." It is possible to have a handicap below 0; these are referred to as 'plus' handicaps, and at the end of the round, a 'plus' handicap golfer must add his handicap to his score. A professional golfer plays off scratch, but has no actual handicap.

In the United States, handicaps are calculated using the player's most recent game scores, along with the course ratings and slopes from the courses played.

Here's how to calculate your golf handicap.

Step 1. Take the scores from the last five rounds (18 holes each) that you played.

Step 2. Get the rating and slope for each course that you played for each of these five scores. You can find this information on the the course's scorecard.

Step 3. Now subtract the course rating from the score you earned on that course.

Step 4. Then multiply that number by 113.

Step 5. Then simply divide that number by the slope of the course. This number is known as your differential.

Step 6. And last... Take the lowest of your five differentials and multiply it by 0.96, and you'll have your handicap!
